The Experience

You know that feeling when you step out of the car and the air smells like salt and pine needles? That’s how our day started just south of Lisbon, with João (our guide) already pointing out the castle above Sesimbra before we’d even finished our coffee. The climb up those old stone steps was steeper than I expected—my knees complained—but the view over the white houses and fishing boats made it worth every breath. João told us about King Afonso and Moorish battles, but honestly I kept getting distracted by the way the Atlantic light bounced off the rooftops. It was quieter than I thought it would be—just a couple of locals chatting near the ramparts, one of them waving as if he knew us.

We wandered down into Sesimbra for lunch—João insisted we try choco frito (I’m still not sure what cuttlefish is supposed to taste like but it was good), and I bought a bag of “Esses” biscuits at his favorite bakery. The woman behind the counter smiled when I tried to say “obrigado”—probably butchered it. After that came Arrábida Natural Park: green hills running straight into blue water, cliffs so sharp they looked drawn with a ruler. At Portinho da Arrábida, everything slowed down—a fisherman mending nets on the shore, that faint seaweed smell in the breeze. We skipped Foz Beach (the path looked wild after lunch), but João said it’s where he goes when he wants real quiet.

I wasn’t expecting to care much about wine tasting but Quinta de Catralvos surprised me—the vineyard dog followed us between rows while we learned about Moscatel de Setúbal (sweet and floral, almost like orange blossom). The cheese—Queijo de Azeitão—was so creamy it nearly slid off my bread. There was this moment in Azeitão village where time felt stuck; cobbled streets under blooming trees, nobody rushing anywhere. On the drive back toward Lisbon we stopped at Cristo Rei Sanctuary just as the sky turned gold over the Tagus river. People were taking photos but I just stood there for a minute—sometimes you need to see your own city from far away to remember why you love it.
