The experience

You start from the ANC Guided Tours office in Valados and ride out into the Sete Cidades crater, steering your own quad through a sequence of stops across the volcanic landscape. The route passes through several points around the rim and down into the valley, with the guide leading the way and setting the pace. Helmets, fuel and personal insurance are provided. You bring a valid Portuguese driving licence and a credit card for the €500 deposit per vehicle (cancelled within 72 hours of the tour).

Lunch is included partway through the day. The two lakes and the tunnel that connects them are part of the route, so you'll ride past both before heading back to the office. The terrain is off-road and the day is long, seven to eight hours total, so moderate fitness and comfort on a quad are assumed. Weather can shift the date at no extra cost. The operator will reschedule if conditions turn.
