The Experience

The first thing I remember is the mud — not in a bad way, just this earthy smell that hit us as soon as we started the quad bikes near Valados. Our guide, João, grinned and yelled something about “Azorean showers” (it was barely drizzling but he made it sound like an adventure). The engine’s rumble drowned out most of my nerves. We took off toward Pico do Carvão, winding up through mossy green hills where cows actually stopped chewing to watch us. I kept thinking I’d stall the quad, but João just waved me on.

There’s this spot called Vista do Rei — I’d seen photos but they don’t really show how big everything feels up there. The air was cold and sharp; you could smell wet grass and something floral I couldn’t name. João pointed out the two lakes, one blue and one green (he told us the legend about star-crossed lovers — honestly, I half-listened because I was busy staring at the clouds rolling over the crater rim). At one point he handed us these little pastries from his backpack — “queijadas,” he said. They were sweet and crumbly and somehow tasted even better with muddy hands.

After that we bounced along more dirt tracks, stopping at random viewpoints where locals had parked their old cars just to look out for a minute before driving off again. Sometimes it got quiet except for our engines cooling down and birds somewhere in the trees. On the way back down to Sete Cidades village, my friend tried to say “obrigado” to an old man waving at us by his garden — she totally butchered it and he just laughed, which made all of us laugh too. The ride ended back where we started but my legs felt shaky in that good way, like after swimming in cold water. Still think about those lake colors sometimes.
