The experience

The 4x4 vehicle picks you at the pier and heads inland to terrain a regular car cannot reach. You choose your destination after talking with the guide about what the day offers: Sete Cidades takes you across crater rims and past two volcanic lakes, with a stop at a small local parish; Furnas pairs hot spring water with fresh spring water inside a volcano, and includes a traditional Portuguese meal cooked using geothermal heat; Lagoa do Fogo combines the natural reserve's blue water with Caldeira Velha's hot waterfall and natural swimming pool, plus a 4x4 trail to a freshwater cascade. A short trail hike can be added at either Furnas or Lagoa do Fogo if you want it.

The vehicle holds up to six people per booking, and the guide speaks English, Portuguese, or both. Port pickup and drop-off are included, as are all taxes and fees. The last row of the 4x4 sits higher and tighter than the others: comfortable for teenagers and smaller travelers, less so for taller passengers on a full vehicle. Collapsible wheelchairs with removable wheels can be accommodated if a companion assists with boarding. Specialized infant seats and strollers are available. At booking, cruise passengers must provide ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time so the guide can time your return.
