The experience
The tour starts at a viewpoint on the south coast with natural swimming pools, then moves inland toward Furnas Lake, where you can walk a small trail along the shore if you choose. The centerpiece is Furnas itself: you'll see inside the volcano where vegetation and fumaroles compete for space, and stop for lunch at a local restaurant where the food is cooked underground using the geothermal heat. After eating, you get a closer look at the volcanic features that make the cooking possible.
A thermal pool bath follows lunch, letting you soak in the hot spring water that defines the area. The route then takes you to the Gorreana tea factory, where you can visit the plantation and see how tea has been made there since 1883. Two viewpoints round out the day: one on the north coast offering wide views toward the sea, and another looking across the valley to Lagoa das Furnas and Vila Franca do Campo. The whole loop takes about seven hours from pickup to drop-off.
