The experience

You leave Ponta Delgada heading south toward Furnas, stopping at viewpoints along the way. The route passes through the volcanic landscape and arrives at the heart of the geothermal zone, where fumarolas and boilers dot the ground. At Villa das Furnas, you bathe in the thermal waters surrounded by the steam vents that define the place. Lunch is the cozido, the famous Azorean stew cooked in holes about a meter deep in the volcanic earth, using only the heat of the boilers themselves.

After lunch and the thermal baths, the tour heads north on the return journey, stopping at the tea factory and plantations: the only tea production in all of Europe. You taste St. Michael's tea, grown in the volcanic soil of the island. The route includes stops at miradouros (viewpoints) and ends with drop-off back at your hotel or airport.
