The experience

The day begins at Cerâmica Vieira, where the guide walks you through the pottery-making process and explains how ceramics fit into Azorean culture. From there the route moves to Lagoa do Fogo itself, stopping at four different viewpoints around the lake so you can photograph the turquoise water and the verdant shores from different angles. Each stop frames a different view of the highlands and the coast.

Mid-morning brings a guided visit to one of the island's less-known sites, followed by a short photo stop at a historical structure in the area. Lunch happens in central Ribeira Grande at a traditional restaurant serving regional Azorean dishes (you pay for your meal separately). After eating, the tour continues to Gorreana, Europe's only tea plantation, where you walk through the layered green crops and tour part of the factory with a tasting included. A final photo stop captures a panoramic view of the northern coast before the group reaches Caldeira Velha hot springs. There you can soak in the thermal waters if you've reserved tickets in advance, or explore the park and visitor centers to learn about the island's wildlife and plants.

The tour runs 7 to 8 hours total. You'll need to be ready at the pickup location by 8:45 a.m., and the guide can speak English, Spanish, Portuguese or French depending on the group. Snacks and WiFi are provided on board, along with powerbanks to charge devices. If you want to bathe in the hot springs, message the operator within 25 hours of booking to secure entry tickets separately.
