Summary

Ride an e-bike along Sete Cidades crater edge down to its twin lakes and village with a guide

You’ll ride an e-bike around Sete Cidades’ volcanic rim with a local guide, coast down into the crater past wildflowers and stone walls, pause at both blue and green lakes, then wander through the old village before climbing back up—with help from your bike’s electric boost. Expect quiet moments by the water and small surprises along the trail.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“Don’t worry, the battery will do most of the work,” our guide Paulo grinned, patting the e-bike like it was a trusty old mule. I half-believed him—until we actually started pedaling along the rim of Sete Cidades. The wind up there is sharper than you’d expect for June, carrying this faint smell of wet grass and volcanic earth. Every few meters Paulo would slow down to point out something—an old stone wall here, a patch of wildflowers there. I kept losing track of time because every turn seemed to open up another view that just made us stop and stare for a bit longer than planned.

The descent into the crater was honestly my favorite part. There’s this moment where you’re rolling downhill, and suddenly both the blue lake and green lake come into view—side by side but totally different shades. I tried to ask Paulo why they’re so different in color (he explained something about algae and light), but mostly I just remember how quiet it got near the water. We parked our bikes by an old bridge where a couple of kids were fishing with string and sticks. The village itself felt sleepy, like everyone was out tending gardens or maybe just napping after lunch. The church bell rang once while we stood outside; not sure why that stuck with me.

Climbing back up sounded worse than it was—thank you, electric motor. Still had to pedal, but it felt more like cheating in a good way. We stopped at Santiago Lake on the way back; Paulo handed me a tangerine from his backpack (he said his aunt grows them nearby). It tasted sweeter than any supermarket fruit back home, probably because I’d earned it—or maybe just because everything feels different when you’re tired and happy at the same time. By then my legs were jelly but in that good “I did something” kind of way.
