The experience
The tour starts with the Wall of the Nine Windows, a 17th-century aqueduct structure, then climbs to Pico da Cruz at 845 meters for the first panorama of the twin lakes (Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde) sitting in the volcanic crater below. From there, the guide takes you to Miradouro das Cumeeiras, a viewpoint on the northern rim that fewer visitors find, and into Sete Cidades village itself so you're not just passing through. A 25-minute walk on the flat peninsula of Lagoa Azul gives you close-up views of both lakes with zero scrambling. This is where the postcard shots happen.
Lunch is your choice: eat at a local restaurant in the village (fresh Azorean dishes run €10–18) or bring your own and picnic on the peninsula with the twin lakes in front of you. The guide drops you off and picks you up on time, so there's no rushing. After lunch, you head higher into the mountains to Lagoa do Fogo, the crater lake surrounded by untouched wilderness that gives the tour its name. The Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint sits high enough that the landscape shifts with the clouds: misty one moment, then bursting with color. Along the way, you'll stop at other viewpoints like Vista do Rei (the most photographed in the Azores) and Miradouro da Barrosa. The route includes off-road sections and hidden trails that bypass the crowds, so you get quieter spots and better angles for photos.
The full day runs 7 to 8 hours and stays private to your group only. The guide is a local expert who knows where the light hits best and which paths lead away from the buses. Stops are customizable. If one viewpoint grabs you, you can linger while the guide adjusts what comes next. Infant seats are available if you're traveling with small children.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Portuguese.
What are the twin lakes at Sete Cidades, and why do they look different colors?
Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde sit in the same volcanic crater but appear different shades (one deep blue, one emerald green) due to minerals and algae in the water and how light reflects off the crater walls. They're among the most photographed lakes in Portugal.
Is there time to walk around the lakes, or is this mostly viewing from lookouts?
You get a 25-minute walk on the flat peninsula of Lagoa Azul right on the water's edge for close-up views and photos. The rest of the day uses viewpoints from the crater rim and higher elevations, so you're not hiking steep terrain.
Can I choose where to eat lunch, or is a restaurant included?
Lunch is your choice. The guide drops you at a local restaurant in Sete Cidades village (dishes €10–18) or at the peninsula if you bring your own picnic. The guide picks you up on time afterward.
What makes this tour different from the shared group tours to the same places?
This is private to your group only, so the pace and stops adjust to what interests you. The guide takes off-road paths and hidden trails that larger tours skip, giving you quieter spots and better photo angles without waiting for other groups.
How high do we climb, and is this suitable if I'm not very fit?
The tour is suitable for all fitness levels. The highest viewpoint is around 845 meters, reached by vehicle. The only walk is the flat 25-minute stroll on the peninsula. The rest is short walks from parking areas to viewpoints.
What is Lagoa do Fogo, and why is it worth the drive up the mountain?
Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire) is a pristine crater lake high in the mountains, surrounded by untouched wilderness and dramatic volcanic slopes. The viewpoint reveals the full island landscape, and the scenery shifts with the clouds: misty and mysterious one moment, then bright with color.
