The experience
You arrive with a free afternoon or a morning to spend, and the guide meets you at your hotel. The route depends on what draws you: most days start in Sete Cidades, a town built inside a crater, where you stop at Lagoa do Canário, King View, Lagoa do Santiago and Lagoa Verde. The drive passes through roads lined with hydrangeas, butterfly ginger and native trees. At each stop you stand at a viewpoint where the green of the hillsides meets the blue of the sky and the water below. The guide points out where to listen for bird calls and which angles catch the light best.
The second half of the day usually follows the road to Lagoa do Fogo from the south, passing the Miradouro da Serra da Barrosa and two geothermal power stations before reaching Salto do Cabrito waterfall and Caldeira Velha natural monument. If Furnas is on the route, you stop in Ribeira Grande (the guide's hometown and the island's second-largest town) and visit a tea plantation, then climb Pico do Ferro for a view down into Furnas and across the town. Furnas itself holds 23 different hot springs. You can try the water at several of them. The tour ends at the fumaroles park, where steam rises from the ground and the guide explains how the geothermal activity shapes the landscape. If weather closes off a planned site, the guide takes you somewhere else on the island that is equally worth seeing.
The whole day runs 6 to 8 hours depending on how many stops you choose and how long you linger. A professional guide in your chosen language (English, Spanish or Portuguese) drives and narrates. Pickup from your accommodation is included. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one.

Is this one for you?The tour runs 6 to 8 hours, which leaves room for breakfast before pickup or a late dinner after you return, but fills most of a day. If you want to see multiple regions of Sāo Miguel in one outing without renting a car or navigating on your own, this format covers the ground. If you prefer shorter stops or a half-day pace, ask the guide what a condensed version would include.
