Portuguese Cooking Class in Porto: Learn Traditional Dishes
Cook Portuguese food the way locals do, in a home kitchen instead of watching from a restaurant table.
A cooking class in Porto where you shop for ingredients with your host, then prepare and eat traditional Portuguese dishes in their home. Before you arrive, your host emails you recipe options so you can choose what to cook. The class runs about three and a half hours, includes a live guide in English or Portuguese, and ends with coffee or tea after dessert and Port wine.
The Experience
Your host meets you at a metro or bus stop and walks you toward their home. Before the class, they'll email you a list of traditional Porto recipes—or dishes from across Portugal—so you can decide what to cook and eat together. If the ingredients need advance preparation like soaking or marinating, your host handles that; otherwise, you'll stop at a butcher, fishmonger, supermarket or small organic garden to pick up what you need.
Once you're in the kitchen, you'll get step-by-step instruction and tips for making the dishes you chose. While everything cooks, you'll taste appetizers and enjoy drinks—cheese, ham, extra virgin olive oil, olives and a salad are always part of the spread. After the main course and dessert, there's coffee or tea to finish. Groups larger than eight cook in a different location, but the format stays the same.
The class includes a live guide who speaks English or Portuguese. You choose between a traditional large menu or an even more special menu at checkout. Hotel pickup is not included, so you'll make your own way to the meeting point using public transport nearby.

What recipes can I choose to cook in this Porto cooking class?
Your host emails you a selection of traditional Portuguese recipes before the class—either specialties from Porto or dishes from across the country—and you pick what you want to prepare and eat together that day.
Do I need to buy groceries myself, or does the host take me shopping?
Your host takes you to the market, butcher, fishmonger, supermarket or organic garden to shop for ingredients together. If a recipe needs advance prep like soaking, your host does that beforehand; otherwise you buy everything fresh before cooking.
What's included in the meal after we cook?
You eat the dishes you've made, plus cheese, ham, extra virgin olive oil, olives and a salad. Dessert, Port wine, and coffee or tea are also included.
How long does the cooking class last?
The class runs about three and a half hours from the time your host meets you at the metro or bus stop through the final coffee or tea.
Is there a difference between the traditional large menu and the even more special menu?
Both options follow the same format—shopping, cooking and eating together in your host's home—but the even more special menu offers a different or more elaborate selection of dishes than the traditional large menu.
Do I need to arrange my own way to the meeting point?
Yes. Your host meets you at a metro or bus stop, and public transportation options are available nearby, so you'll make your own way there. Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included.
