The Experience
The day starts early with pickup from your Lisbon hotel and a drive north through the valleys of Bussaco National Park and along the Mondego River. The landscape shifts as you climb toward the Douro Valley, where you'll stop at one of the region's oldest wine producers to taste Port wine paired with regional cheese while looking out over the valley itself. This is the core of the tour (the vineyards and the tasting), and the rest of the day branches from it.
After the tasting, you continue to Porto with around four hours to move through the city on your own. The itinerary names the stops worth your time: the Dom Luís I Bridge (where the best views of Porto open up), the Porto Cathedral, and São Bento Railway Station, which occupies the site of a former convent and holds a collection of azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history. Your driver does not accompany you through Porto, though you can request a guide at checkout if you want one. The air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water and WiFi are yours for the whole day.
