The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Paracas hotel and heads into the reserve in Ica province. The first stop is Supay Beach viewpoint, where desert meets sea at high cliffs: the landscape combines sand dunes with ocean color and birds overhead. From there a short walk reaches Cathedral, the rock formation declared a World Heritage Site. The 2007 earthquake reshaped it, but the site remains a habitat for sea lions, otters, dolphins, reptiles and birds.

The route then follows the coast past Yumaque Beach, a moon-shaped cove where seagulls and dolphins appear, and Red Beach, where ancient volcanic eruptions left reddish sand: one of Peru's most unusual geological sites. A flamingo viewpoint shows migratory birds that arrive seasonally. The Interpretation Room explains the reserve's importance, history and local fauna, with displays of marine fossils found here.

The final stop is Lagunillas, a working fisherman's bay where you can order ceviche (fresh raw fish marinated in lemon juice, a Peruvian staple) if you want it. After the tour ends, you're transferred back to your hotel. Children from age 8 are welcome. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the exposed desert and coast.

What is Cathedral and why is it a World Heritage Site?

Cathedral is a rock formation in Paracas National Reserve declared a World Heritage Site. A strong earthquake in 2007 altered its shape, but it remains a key habitat for sea lions, otters, dolphins and birds, and a major stop on the tour.

Food and drinks are not included. At Lagunillas fishing bay, the final stop, you can order ceviche if you want it. Otherwise bring snacks and water for the four-hour tour.

What should I bring for this half-day tour?
