The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the salty air — not that gentle sea breeze you get in some places, but something sharper. We were already halfway into our helmets when our guide, Luis, grinned and said something about “Peruvian rollercoasters.” I laughed but held on tight as we started up the ATVs. The sand here is different — almost squeaky under your boots — and the whole Reserva Nacional de Paracas just sort of opens up around you once you get moving.

We made our first stop at the Cathedral viewpoint. It’s not really a cathedral (I didn’t know that), but this huge rock arch above crashing waves. Luis told us how part of it collapsed after an earthquake — he showed me old photos on his phone, which felt oddly personal. The wind up there is loud, like it’s trying to say something. I tried to take a photo but my hair was everywhere and honestly, I gave up and just watched the water for a minute.

Playa Roja was next — that’s the red beach you see in all the Paracas day trip photos. But it’s even stranger in person; the sand is this deep rusty color and feels gritty between your fingers. There were a few families picnicking nearby, kids chasing each other barefoot. Luis pointed out some birds nesting along the cliffs (I forget their names). After that we bumped along to Yumaque Beach and the isthmus — more quiet than I expected. Just us, some distant gulls, and that endless horizon.

I’m still thinking about that wild feeling of riding across open sand with nothing but dunes ahead. If you’ve never done an ATV tour in Paracas before… well, it’s not what I pictured at all (in a good way). My arms were sore by the end but I couldn’t stop smiling.
