The Experience

You get behind the wheel of a minibuggy and drive it yourself through the Paracas desert. Before heading into the reserve, you'll receive safety instruction and put on a helmet. At the entrance checkpoint, you'll pay the reserve admission fee, then your guide leads you in your own vehicle to the first stop: Playa Yumaque, a beach known for its cleanliness and conservation, where you have 20 minutes to walk the sand and photograph the coastline.

The route continues to Playa Roja, where the contrast between the yellowish desert, the red beach, and the blue water creates the kind of landscape that stops you mid-drive. You explore on foot and take pictures. Then you cross what the operator calls the lunar desert—pale, rippled sand that looks like another planet—and climb a slope to reach the Istmo viewpoint, the highest point on the peninsula. From there you can see the immensity of the sea stretching in both directions, with the continent on one side and the peninsula on the other. The drive back happens as the sun sets over Paracas.

The whole experience runs 2 hours. Four departure times are available each day: 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. An official guide travels with you and explains each stop in English or Spanish. Pickup is included, and the activity suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for pregnant travelers. Children from age 5 are welcome.
