The experience

You start with a safety briefing and basic handling instructions (the vehicles are straightforward to operate), then follow your guide into the reserve. The route crosses the peninsula's colored sediments and dunes, a landscape that shifts between yellow desert and blue sea. Three stops break the ride: Playa Yumaque, the Isthmus and Playa Roja, where the contrast between the dunes and ocean is most striking.

Choose between a single-rider ATV or a two-seat buggy (called a Tubular locally) before you book. Both are all-terrain vehicles built for the desert. If you pick the buggy and want to drive it alone, an additional fee of 100 soles applies. Otherwise, a second passenger rides with you at no extra cost. The guide sets the pace and timing for the whole group.
