The experience
The excursion starts with pickup from your hotel, then heads north on the Pan-American Highway toward the Nazca desert. Before reaching the Mirador, you stop at the Sitio María Museum, where the German archaeologist María Reiche lived and worked for over 20 years studying the lines. The museum preserves her cabin, photographs, measuring instruments and personal belongings, along with her tomb. It's the only place that documents her five decades of research on the geoglyphs.
From the Mirador metal tower, you see two of the Nazca figures clearly (the Hands and the Tree) from ground level rather than from the air. The guide explains the competing theories about how and why the ancient Nazca people made these enormous geoglyphs. You also see part of the Lizard, which is cut by the highway itself. The walk continues to a natural hill viewpoint where many of the straight lines converge, giving you a sense of the desert's scale and the precision of the ancient design.
Your bilingual guide speaks Spanish and English throughout. Transportation, all entrance fees and hotel return are included in the booking.
