The Experience

You board a small aircraft at Nazca airport with five or eleven other passengers, depending on which plane you're on. The pilot briefs you on what you're about to see — the Nazca Lines spread across the desert floor below, and which figures appear on each side of the plane so you know when to look left or right. Panoramic windows run the length of both rows, so there's no bad seat.

The flight over the Nazca Lines takes 30 minutes total. You'll see the 17 main figures of the circuit: the monkey, the hummingbird, the spider, the dog, geometric shapes that stretch hundreds of meters across the ground. The scale only makes sense from the air — on foot, you'd stand in the middle of a line and see nothing but dirt. Up here, the whole design opens at once. The pilot points them out as you pass, and the window seat means you can photograph without leaning across anyone.
