Stand on the Nazca Lines themselves, then climb a 20-meter tower to face the Hands, Tree and Lizard

A ground-based tour of Nazca and Palpa geoglyphs lasting three hours, departing from the city with a knowledgeable guide and returning by air-conditioned vehicle. You visit the Llipata viewpoint in Palpa to see older geoglyphs from a tower, then move to two additional Nazca vantage points (one a 20-meter metal structure donated by Yamagata University), where you observe three iconic figures and walk directly on the ancient lines themselves, an experience unavailable from the air. The Maria Reiche House Museum is optional.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Palpa and Nazca Lookouts

  • Visit Llipata viewpoint in Palpa
  • Observe Palpa Lines from tower
  • Visit 20-meter tower for Nazca Lines
  • Admire Lizard, Hands, and Tree geoglyphs
  • Stand on Nazca Lines hilltop
  • Optional visit to María Reiche House Museum

The experience

Three hours and roughly 45 minutes of driving take you from Nazca into Palpa district, where the Llipata viewpoint sits above geoglyphs older than the famous Lines themselves. You climb a tower to see them clearly (figures the Nazca flight never reaches), then return toward Nazca for two more stops that frame the Lines from the ground in ways a plane cannot. The 20-meter observation tower donated by Yamagata University puts you face-to-face with the Hands, the Tree, and the Lizard (split in half by the Pan-American Highway decades before anyone understood what it was).

The third stop takes you to a hilltop where straight lines stretch for kilometers across the desert floor. This is the only place on earth where you can actually stand on the Nazca Lines, not above them, not viewing them from a distance, but standing inside the ancient canvas itself. The scale and precision become real in a way no photograph or flight footage conveys. If time and interest allow, the Maria Reiche House Museum is available as an optional addition.

Your guide speaks English or Spanish and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle throughout. Children from age one are welcome. Entrance fees to the lookouts are included in some options and added in others. Confirm at checkout which version you've selected.

Is this one for you? This tour works best if you want to understand the Nazca Lines from ground level and feel their scale firsthand, rather than seeing them only from a plane. The fixed three-hour route with a guide means you move through all three viewpoints on a set schedule, which keeps the day efficient but doesn't allow for lingering at any single stop.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (1 to 10 years).

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the difference between this tour and flying over the Nazca Lines?

This tour keeps you on the ground at three separate vantage points: the Llipata viewpoint in Palpa, a 20-meter tower overlooking three iconic geoglyphs, and a hilltop where you actually stand on the Lines themselves. A flight shows you the figures from above but doesn't let you feel the scale or walk on the ancient surface. Many travelers do both: the flight for the bird's-eye view and this tour for the ground-level perspective that makes the engineering real.

Can I see the Palpa geoglyphs on a standard Nazca Lines tour?

No. The Llipata viewpoint in Palpa and its geoglyphs are not part of typical Nazca tours or flights. This tour includes them specifically, and they're considered older than the Nazca Lines, making this the only way to see both in one day.

How far is the drive from Nazca city, and what's the vehicle like?

The viewpoints are about 45 minutes from Nazca by air-conditioned vehicle. You travel with your guide in the same vehicle for all three stops, so there's no switching between transport methods or waiting for group transfers.

Is the Maria Reiche House Museum included?

The museum visit is optional and depends on your preferences and available time during the tour. You can choose to add it or skip it. Confirm your preference when booking.

What does "standing on the Nazca Lines" actually mean?

The final stop is a hilltop within the authorized area of the Nazca Pampa where the ancient straight lines run across the desert floor beneath your feet. It's the only place where visitors can physically stand on the geoglyphs rather than viewing them from a distance or from above.
