Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Machu Picchu and hike mountain
- Enter Machu Picchu ruins
- Climb Machu Picchu Mountain hike
- Enjoy panoramic views of Urubamba River
The experience
Only 800 people enter Machu Picchu Mountain each day, divided into two groups, which means you're climbing with a small, managed crowd rather than fighting through thousands. The hike itself takes 2 to 3 hours and depends on your own pace and fitness level. From the summit, you see the Inca ruins spread across the valley below and the Urubamba River snaking through the landscape: a view twice as high as what Huayna Picchu offers, the other peak most visitors climb. The ticket gets you into both the citadel and the mountain in one booking.
You'll pick your start time at checkout: 6:00 am, 7:00 am, or 9:00 am. Earlier departures mean fewer people on the trail and cooler temperatures during the climb, but they require an early wake-up from wherever you're staying in Aguas Calientes. The later slot gives you more time in the morning but more company on the mountain. Children from age 8 can join. Younger children can come to Machu Picchu itself but won't be permitted on the mountain hike. You'll need to arrange a guide separately if you want one, that's not included, and you'll also book your own train and bus tickets to reach the site.
What’s included
- Entrance to Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain.
- access to the summit trail with views of the Urubamba River and surrounding peaks.

Is this one for you?The early departures (6:00 am and 7:00 am) suit climbers who want the quietest trail and coolest conditions, though they demand an early start from Aguas Calientes. The 9:00 am slot works better if you prefer a slower morning and don't mind sharing the mountain with more people.
