The Experience

Someone pulls out their phone at the entrance gate, opens a message, and shows a screen to the attendant. That's you, holding your entry ticket to Machu Picchu in your hand — or rather, in your pocket. The ticket comes via WhatsApp or email, which means no printed voucher to lose, no office to find, no line to stand in before you can start walking. You'll have a specific entry time, assigned based on what's available when you book, and that time is your window into the archaeological zone.

The ticket grants access to Circuit 2, the classic designed route through the Inca city. Depending on availability at the moment you purchase, you'll receive either the standard Circuit 2 or the lower terrace variant — both are valid for the same archaeological zone, and either one lets you move through the main structures, terraces and viewpoints at your own pace. There's no guide included, no group, no fixed stops. You walk when you want, pause where you want, and spend as long as you need in front of the temples, the agricultural terraces, or the stone walls that have stood for nearly five centuries. The entry time is subject to availability, so if your preferred hour is full, another available slot will be offered instead.

Getting to Machu Picchu itself — the train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo, the bus up the mountain, the walk through the town of Aguas Calientes — that's separate from this ticket. What this covers is entry to the site itself, nothing more. You'll need moderate physical fitness to move around the ruins; the terrain is uneven, the altitude is high, and there are stairs. Infants travel free on an adult's lap. Pregnant travelers and anyone with spinal injuries or cardiovascular concerns should check with a doctor first.
