The experience
The first thing I remember is the sound: shoes crunching on gravel, someone ahead whispering in Spanish, and that weird hush you get when everyone’s a little awestruck. The air felt damp but clean, almost sweet. We’d gotten our Machu Picchu entrance tickets sent to WhatsApp the day before (which honestly made things less stressful), so there was no scrambling at the gate. Just a quick scan and we were inside, right up against those old stones you see in every photo but never really believe until you’re there.
Our guide (Miguel, who grew up in Ollantaytambo) pointed out how each wall fit together without mortar. He said the Incas called it “ashlar,” which I probably mispronounced. The clouds kept rolling over the peaks, sometimes hiding Huayna Picchu for a few minutes at a time. You could smell wet moss and something faintly earthy, like potatoes after rain. Miguel laughed when I asked if people ever get lost on these circuits. Apparently yes, if you’re too busy taking selfies (guilty). We picked one of the main circuits since we didn’t want to rush. The ticket lets you choose, but once you’re walking it’s easy to forget about time slots entirely.
I didn’t expect the quietest moments to stick with me most: standing by a window stone where light cut through just right, or watching a woman from Lima touch the wall with her eyes closed. My legs were tired by noon and my heart was pounding harder than I’d admit out loud (altitude is real), but I wouldn’t trade that feeling for anything. There’s something humbling about moving through a place that’s survived centuries of storms and footsteps: makes your own worries feel smaller somehow.
