The experience

The day starts at 7:00am with pickup from your Panama City hotel, then a 1.5-hour drive to the Atlantic side of the country. The Agua Clara Locks sit on the Caribbean coast as part of the Panama Canal expansion, and from the covered observation decks you watch container ships, including the massive New Panamax vessels, rise and fall through the three-chambered lock system. The visitor center screens two videos in English explaining how engineers raised Gatun Lake and widened the channels to handle the larger ships. If you want to move around, a short rainforest trail nearby is home to sloths, howler monkeys and toucans.

By 11:00am you arrive at Fort San Lorenzo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built from cut coral blocks at the mouth of the Río Chagres. The fort's moat, cannons and vaulted chambers are well preserved, and your guide walks you through its violent history, including the 17th-century occupation by Sir Francis Drake's privateers, whose British-made cannons still sit in the fort's gun emplacements. The location commands views of the river and bay below, which is exactly why the Spanish chose it as a strategic stronghold. You return to Panama City by 1:00pm.

An air-conditioned car and English or Spanish-speaking driver-guide are included. The entrance fee to the natural reservation at Fort San Lorenzo is $5 per person and paid separately. Children from age 3 travel in their own car seats, though booster seats are not available. If your hotel is outside central Panama City (in areas like Tocumen, Costa del Este or Playa Bonita), a surcharge applies. You can select the correct pickup zone when booking.

What exactly happens at the Agua Clara Locks?

The Agua Clara Locks are the newer set of locks built as part of the Panama Canal expansion on the Atlantic side.
