Hike, swim and abseil through a 3km canyon carved into Oman's high desert

Snake Canyon Adventure Tour is a half-day activity in Jebel Shams, Oman, where you hike 3km through a narrow canyon, swim and jump into crystal-clear pools, and abseil roughly 10 meters down rock faces. The route takes around 3–4 hours and is led by certified, English-speaking guides who grew up in the area and have guided since 2009. Suitable for families and explorers alike, the tour includes bottled water, snacks, and all safety equipment. Pickup from anywhere in Oman can be arranged for an additional fee.

The experience

You arrive at Snake Canyon ready to move. The guides lead you into the canyon itself, no long approach, and the 3km route unfolds as a sequence of obstacles and water. You'll hike across boulders, duck through caves, and wade through pools that deepen as you go. The canyon walls rise around you, and the water stays clear enough to see the stone beneath. When you reach the deeper sections, you jump in, swim across, and climb back out to keep moving.

The abseil comes partway through: a roughly 10-meter descent down a rock face using ropes and harnesses the guides provide. It's the technical moment in an otherwise physical day, not a rappel into a void, but a controlled drop into a pool below. After that, the canyon continues with more water crossings and scrambling until the route ends. The whole thing takes around 3–4 hours from start to finish. Guides carry bottled water and snacks to refuel you along the way, and they speak English and Arabic, so language is not a barrier.

Bring a waterproof camera or a waterproof phone bag if you want pictures. The water is the point, so wet gear is expected. Water shoes help on the slippery stone, though they're not mandatory. The minimum age is 15. If you need transport to the canyon, the operator can pick you up from anywhere in Oman for an added cost: arrange it when you book.

Is this one for you?The route demands continuous movement (hiking, scrambling, swimming and jumping) over 3–4 hours, so this suits travelers who want active time in the water and are comfortable with wet, uneven terrain. If you prefer a slower pace or want to stay dry, a different canyon experience would fit better.
