Snake Canyon Canyoneering in Oman: Abseil & Swim
Abseil into pools surrounded by towering dolomite walls
Canyoneering in Snake Canyon, Oman is a guided activity where you climb, abseil and swim through a narrow 3-kilometer canyon carved by water, with three descents of 7, 25 and 11 meters, full technical safety gear, and a local guide speaking English, French or Arabic. The canyon's 100-meter rock faces keep the water cold year-round. You'll get completely soaked, swimming through and under waterfalls. Lunch and water are included. Children from age 4 are welcome, though the activity requires moderate fitness and is not suitable for spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health.

The experience
The canyon itself is the equipment: 100-meter walls of dolomite and limestone rise on both sides, shading the water and keeping it between 12 and 25 degrees Celsius depending on the season. You'll wear a full technical harness, helmet and lifejacket throughout. The three abseils (7 meters, 25 meters, and 11 meters) punctuate the route, each one dropping you into a pool below. Between them you climb, slide and swim, moving upstream through narrow passages where the rock walls close in and the water rises to your chest or higher.
The day runs 4 to 6 hours depending on group size and how the queue moves at the abseiling points. You'll swim through waterfalls and under overhanging rock, sometimes needing both hands in the water. Submerged sections are part of the route. Bring a change of clothes and expect to be soaked completely. A local guide leads the group in English, French or Arabic, managing the technical setup and pacing the stops so everyone moves safely through the canyon.
After canyoneering, lunch and water are provided. Children from age 4 can join, though moderate physical fitness is required. The activity is not recommended for anyone with spinal injuries, pregnancy, poor cardiovascular health or chronic illness.
