The experience

The tour starts at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque around 8:30 AM, where you stop outside or pay separately to enter and stand beneath a 21-ton handmade Iranian carpet that took craftspeople months to complete. The mosque holds up to 20,000 worshippers and requires long sleeves, long pants and a headscarf for women. From there the guide drives you past the ministries and the Royal Opera House, Oman's leading arts and culture venue, then stops at Qurum Beach for photos before you taste Omani bread with honey and karak tea: a small moment that anchors the morning to local flavor.

Muttrah Souq comes next, one of the oldest marketplaces in Oman dating back two hundred years, where you can browse souvenirs and textiles without a set schedule. Al Alam Palace, the official residence of His Majesty, appears as a photo stop, followed by the two Portuguese forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani, which sit on the harbor and offer picture opportunities throughout. The tour ends at the Parliament building for a final photo stop. A 4WD vehicle picks you up from your hotel and drops you back there when the morning is done.

Entry to Al Alam Palace, Qurum Beach and Muttrah Souq is included. The Royal Opera House and Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque charge separate fees (3 OMR or 8 USD for the Opera House, 8 OMR or 21 USD for the Mosque interior). Bottled water comes with the tour. Lunch does not.
