Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Dunedin and Otago Peninsula
- Conquer the world's steepest street
- Visit Dunedin Railway Station and toilet break
- Experience wildlife capital's beauty
- Tour Larnach Castle and gardens
- Explore Dunedin's Pacific coastline
- Enjoy scenic high road ocean views
The Experience
The tour starts with Baldwin Street, the world's steepest street, where you'll learn the quirky history behind its extreme gradient. From there you move through Dunedin's landmarks — the Railway Station, one of New Zealand's most photographed buildings, and the wildlife-rich areas that earned the region its reputation as the country's wildlife capital. The route then heads to Larnach Castle, the only castle in New Zealand, where you step inside for a guided tour of the interior, the award-winning gardens and the views across the landscape.
The five-hour loop covers the rugged Pacific coastline and takes you up the scenic high road for views back over the city and ocean. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a live guide providing commentary throughout. Pickup and drop-off happen at your hotel or port, so the logistics are handled — you just show up. Groups stay at eight people maximum, which means the pace stays relaxed and you're not herded through stops.
The guide speaks English or German. Children from age one are welcome, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one. If you prefer to use public transport to reach the meeting point, options exist nearby, though the included pickup removes that step.
