The Experience

The tour leaves Port Chalmers at 9am sharp, so you'll need to be ready by 8:45. The first stop is a city sights loop through Dunedin itself—Otago University, the Botanical Gardens, historic buildings, and Baldwin Street, which holds the title of world's steepest street. The driver points out landmarks and stops for photos, then heads out to the Otago Peninsula where Larnach Castle sits on a commanding vantage point.

Larnach Castle was built in 1871 and is New Zealand's only castle. A guided tour walks you through the building's scandalous, exciting and tragic history while you take in the interior and the gardens, which are of international significance. The grounds offer views across the peninsula. There's time for lunch here at your own expense before the group moves on.

Back in Dunedin, you visit the Chinese Garden—an authentic recreation built by artisans and craftsmen from Shanghai, Dunedin's sister city. It was created as a permanent recognition of the Chinese people who arrived during the 1880s gold rush and stayed to build businesses in Otago. Adjacent to the gardens, the Otago Early Settlers Museum holds over 100,000 items spanning the region's character, culture, technology, art, fashion and transport from before European settlement to today. The tour returns you to the cruise port in time for departure.
