The Experience

We’d barely stepped off the shuttle in Dunedin when our guide, Peter, pointed at a street so steep it looked like a dare. “That’s Baldwin Street,” he grinned. “Locals used to race fridges down it.” I tried picturing that—fridges clattering past tidy hedges—and laughed, maybe a bit too loudly for 9am. The air was chilly but smelled faintly of seaweed from the harbor; even the wind felt different here, sharper somehow. Peter handed us a map but mostly just told stories as we drove—the kind you don’t get from signs.

Signal Hill gave us this wild view of the city and Otago Peninsula all tangled together—rooftops, green hills, then suddenly the blue water curling around everything. There was a moment when nobody said anything; just camera shutters and that distant sound of gulls. Later we wandered through Dunedin Botanic Garden where everything seemed extra green after last night’s rain. I touched some weirdly fuzzy leaf (no idea what it was) and got mud on my jeans—classic me.

The drive out along Highcliff Road is all bends and glimpses of sheep or students cycling past old stone houses. We stopped by University of Otago (Peter called it “the brain of New Zealand”) and passed The Octagon where people sat outside cafés even though their breath made little clouds in the air. At Dunedin Railway Station I tried to take one of those perfect photos but ended up with my thumb in the corner—oh well.

Larnach Castle Gardens felt like something out of a storybook—roses everywhere, paths winding off into misty corners. We didn’t go inside the castle itself (extra fee) but honestly I was happy just sitting with coffee on a damp bench listening to Peter tell the Larnach family saga (it got dark fast—Victorian drama levels). Olveston Historic Home was next: creaky floorboards, sunlight through stained glass, rooms full of odd treasures left exactly as they were a century ago. It felt weirdly intimate, like we were tiptoeing through someone else’s memories. I still think about that quiet upstairs hallway sometimes—you know how some places just stick with you?
