itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Dunedin city and Otago Peninsula tour

  • Walk to top of steepest street
  • Visit Signal Hill photo spot
  • See University and clock tower
  • Wander most photographed building
  • Visit Larnach Castle and gardens
  • Have café lunch at castle
  • Explore Otago Peninsula scenery

I nearly chickened out at the bottom of Baldwin Street — it really is as steep as everyone says. Our guide, Mark, just grinned and told us not to overthink it. I huffed my way up anyway (halfway counts, right?) and honestly, the view from up there made my legs forgive me. The houses looked like they were clinging on for dear life. Someone’s cat watched us from a window like it’d seen this show before.

After that little workout, we drove through Dunedin’s old university district. Mark pointed out the clock tower — apparently built in 1879 — and I tried to imagine being a student here, rain or shine. We stopped at Signal Hill for photos; the wind was sharp but the city just sprawled out below us, all green and grey with a bit of sea at the edge. It smelled faintly of wet stone and eucalyptus.

Larnach Castle was next — I’d heard it called New Zealand’s only castle but didn’t expect it to feel so lived-in (the café had scones still warm from the oven). We didn’t tour inside, but wandered through the gardens instead. There were rhododendrons everywhere and some kind of pine that made the air smell fresh even though rain threatened all afternoon. I lost track of time just watching clouds roll over Otago Peninsula — I still think about that view sometimes.

Lunch was simple: soup and bread in the garden café, with tea that tasted better than usual after walking outside for hours. Mark chatted about his childhood in Dunedin — he said you never get used to the weather but learn to love its moods. So yeah, if you’re after a day trip from Dunedin with real stories and space to breathe (and maybe test your calves), this one’s worth it.
