The Experience
The air in Dilli Bazar felt different as we pulled up—spices and incense mixing with the cool evening breeze. Our driver chatted about his favorite local snacks on the way, which made me even more curious for what was coming. When we stepped inside Bhojan Griha, the staff greeted us with a warm “Namaste” and a dab of red tika on our foreheads. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s an old mansion, creaky floors and all, tucked away just a short drive from Thamel.
We settled onto low cushions around a wooden table, surrounded by flickering butter lamps. The first plate arrived—crispy sel roti and spicy achar—followed by momos that disappeared fast. Each course came with a quick story from our server about where it came from or how it’s made at home. While we ate, dancers in bright costumes spun through the room: Sherpa steps one moment, then Newar drums shaking the floor the next. There was even a bit where guests could join in (I tried… not my best move!). The show wrapped up around 9 PM, just as dessert—a sweet rice pudding—landed on our table. Our ride back to the hotel was quiet; everyone was full and happy.
