The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound — a jumble of bicycle bells and people calling out prices in Nepali, right as we ducked into Asan Market. Our guide, Suman, waved us over to a tiny stall where steam curled up from a battered pot. He grinned and handed me something fried (I think he said “sel roti”?), still warm in my palm. The air smelled like cardamom and something I couldn’t place — maybe cumin? It was busy but not overwhelming, just this constant flow of people weaving around baskets of chilies and ginger.

We tried at least five things, maybe more if you count the lassi that left my upper lip sticky for half an hour. Suman kept checking if anyone was vegetarian or allergic — he even found a vegan version of momos for one woman in our group. Someone asked about the old temples nearby and suddenly we were standing in front of Kathmandu Durbar Square, with its carved windows and pigeons everywhere. Bells rang from inside a temple and I caught the scent of incense mixed with fried dough — weirdly comforting.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much, honestly. Suman teased us about how we held our tea (“like tourists!”) and told stories about his childhood here — apparently he used to sneak snacks from these same stalls after school. The tour felt less like a checklist and more like wandering around with someone who knows every shortcut. I still think about that first bite of spicy potato chat; it hit different after walking those crowded lanes for an hour. If you’re looking for a walking street food tour in Kathmandu that actually feels local (and includes all the food), this one gets it right.

What’s included

Your day includes meeting your guide near Asan Market before exploring vibrant lanes on foot; you’ll taste at least five classic Nepali dishes plus drinks like masala tea or lassi—no extra costs for food or drink along the way. The route winds through market stalls toward historic Durbar Square before wrapping up nearby.
