experience

What’s the experience like?

The air was thick with the smell of damp earth as we slid our canoe onto the Rapti River that first morning. Our guide, Rajan, pointed out a pair of mugger crocodiles sunning themselves on the muddy bank—honestly, I’d never seen anything like it. Birds darted overhead; I caught sight of a kingfisher’s flash of blue. After drifting past the reeds for about two hours, we pulled up near Ghatgai village. Rajan gave us a quick rundown on how to move quietly in the jungle—turns out, even your backpack zippers can spook wildlife here. That night, we stayed at a local homestay. The family served us dal bhat and told stories about tigers spotted just last week.

Next day started early—like before sunrise early. The jungle felt different at that hour: cool, misty, and alive with bird calls you don’t hear later in the day. We crossed the river again and set off on foot with two guides leading us through tall grass and sal trees. Saw fresh rhino tracks in the mud (bigger than my hand), and once or twice we stopped dead still when Rajan raised his hand—he said sometimes you hear deer warning calls before you see anything else. By late afternoon we reached Madi village for another homestay; simple rooms but honestly comfortable after a long walk.

The third day was all about tracking rare animals—tiger territory now. Our guides kept checking for pugmarks along sandy trails. We heard a great hornbill flapping overhead (the wings make this deep whooshing sound). Didn’t spot a tiger but saw plenty of signs—scratches on tree trunks, old scat near a waterhole. Back to Madi village by dusk; my legs were tired but my head was buzzing from everything we’d seen.

Last morning came with another early wake-up call (roosters beat any alarm clock). After breakfast, an open jeep rolled up outside our homestay. This part felt different—wind in your face as you bump deeper into the park’s core zones where tourists rarely go. We passed quiet lakes ringed by tall grass; spotted deer grazing close to the track and even glimpsed wild boar darting into cover. The safari ended at Sauraha just before sunset—the light turning everything gold as we said goodbye to our guides.
