The experience

The tour starts with a couple of hours canoeing the Rapti River, where you watch for crocodiles and migratory birds before crossing to Ghatgai village for your first night in a homestay. Your two guides brief you on the park's flora, fauna and animal behavior, and walk you through safety before the landscape itself takes over.

Days two and three are full jungle walks starting before sunrise. You move through flat terrain with dense vegetation around you, the guides reading the forest for signs of movement: tiger, rhino, sloth bear, wild boar, sambar deer. The walks finish before sunset each day, and you sleep in homestays in Madi village. This is the part that takes time and patience. The guides know where tigers have been spotted recently and will take you to those zones, though finding one is never guaranteed.

The final day a jeep picks you up at the homestay for a full-day safari into the core and deepest parts of the national park, where natural lakes sit and wildlife concentrates. The open-hooded vehicle covers ground a walking tour cannot, reaching areas most visitors never see. The safari ends back in Sauraha before sunset. If the main park is closed for any reason, the jeep operates in the Buffer Zone forest instead.
