The experience
You leave Kathmandu early and drive five to six hours to Chitwan National Park, arriving in time for lunch and a briefing before your first activity. After an hour to rest, you take a 30-minute canoe ride down the river, then walk 45 minutes into the jungle with two guides to reach the tower where you'll sleep that night. The guides stay with you throughout, and you bring your packed dinner to eat there as the light fades and the animals move.
Day two is yours to shape: wake early to watch the sunrise from the tower, then choose between a full day of jungle walking with your guides or a quieter day inside the park with meals brought from town. Both keep you in the tower for another night. On day three you walk out of the jungle in the early morning, then switch to a jeep safari and evening cycling around Sauraha town, where you stay in a deluxe hotel. That evening you watch the Tharu cultural dance show: the local ethnic group performs with sticks, a tradition rooted in how they used to scare wild animals away from their crops. You'll also have time to explore Sauraha itself, the main town next to the park, with shops, restaurants and local food stalls. Day four is the return drive to Kathmandu, five to six hours.
The guides are trained in animal tracking and know the jungle well enough to move through any conditions. You'll see birds, deer and rhinos grazing. The tower gives you a vantage point most safari visitors don't get. Meals are included throughout, and the transport is air-conditioned both ways.

Is this one for you?The tour involves early starts, walking on uneven jungle ground and sleeping in a tower without electricity or running water. The trade-off is that you see the park from inside it, not from a vehicle window, and you're there when the animals are most active at dawn and dusk.
