The experience
The tour starts with a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu to Chitwan, where you check into your resort and have lunch waiting. That first afternoon you walk the grounds with a local guide, catch the sunset, and attend a briefing on what the park holds. In the evening, the Tharu cultural dance show, a traditional performance by locals, fills the night. This pacing lets you settle into the park before the wildlife activities begin.
Day two is the core of the safari: a canoe ride down the Rapti River opens the morning, where you watch for the two rare crocodile species (Marsh Mugger and Gharial) and spot birds from the water. A short jungle walk follows, then bird watching continues. The afternoon brings a jeep safari through the grassland and forest, where you have a real chance at seeing four kinds of deer, rhinoceros, wild boar, monkeys, leopards, sloth bears and, if luck holds, the Royal Bengal Tiger. The park occupies 960 square kilometers of former royal hunting ground, now one of Nepal's richest wildlife habitats.
On the final morning, breakfast and then the 6-hour drive back to Kathmandu on an air-conditioned coach. The operator can arrange vegetarian, vegan or allergy-friendly meals if you let them know when you book.
