The Experience

The tour starts with a 5- to 6-hour drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Chitwan, where your guides meet you for lunch and a briefing. That first afternoon includes a visit to a nearby Tharu village to see how the local people live, a stop at the National Park Visitor's Centre, and a sunset view from the Rapti River bank before a Tharu cultural dance presentation in the evening. You sleep in a 3-star safari hotel that night.

Days 2 and 3 are the core of the trek: full-day jungle walks covering 15 to 20 kilometers each, starting at 5:30 a.m. with breakfast at 6 a.m. and the walk beginning at 6:30 a.m. Your two guides carry packed lunch, fruit, juice and water for the day. Between these two long walks, you stay in a local village homestay with a private bathroom and air conditioning—first in Ghatgain, then in Madi. Both villages sit at the edge of the national park, so the walking picks up again each morning. Chitwan is the only national park in the world that allows tourists to walk in the core area, where one-horned rhinos, multiple deer species, two types of crocodiles, elephants, Royal Bengal tigers, bison and sloth bears live. The guides' decades of experience means you move through the landscape with people who know where to look and what you're seeing.

Day 4 is a half-day walk of 10 to 12 kilometers focused on bird watching in Pandavnagar, a site known for sighting many bird and animal species. After lunch you drive 60 kilometers back to Sauraha, where you stay in another 3-star safari hotel. Day 5 is the return drive to Kathmandu or Pokhara, another 5 to 6 hours. The tour requires a high level of physical fitness and is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular conditions.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you're starting from Kathmandu or Pokhara without a car—the coach pickup and drop-off settle the transport question, and the guides' decades of jungle experience mean you move through the core wildlife area with people who know the animals and the landscape, not a route someone memorized.

Top questions

What animals will I actually see on the jungle walks in Chitwan?

Chitwan is home to one-horned rhinos, several deer species, two types of crocodiles, elephants, Royal Bengal tigers, bison and sloth bears. The park's core area, where this tour walks, is where these animals live, though sightings depend on timing and luck—your guides know the landscape and animal behavior well enough to position you where encounters are most likely.

How much walking is involved each day?

Days 2 and 3 are full-day jungle walks covering 15 to 20 kilometers each, starting at 6:30 a.m. after breakfast and continuing with a packed lunch break during the day. Day 4 is a shorter half-day walk of 10 to 12 kilometers focused on bird watching, followed by a 60-kilometer drive back to Sauraha.

Where do I sleep during the jungle walking days?

You stay in local village homestays with private bathrooms and air conditioning on nights 2 and 3—in Ghatgain after the first full day and in Madi after the second. These are small village hotels at the edge of the national park. Nights 1 and 4 are in 3-star safari hotels in Sauraha with air-conditioned cottage-style rooms.

Do I need to arrange my own transport from Kathmandu or Pokhara?

No. The tour includes a tourist coach pickup and 5- to 6-hour drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara on day 1, and the return drive on day 5. Your guides meet you upon arrival in Chitwan.

What's included in the price?

All meals for five days, accommodation for four nights, both experienced English-speaking nature guides, all national park fees and taxes, and transport by tourist coach from Kathmandu or Pokhara are included.
