The Experience

The day starts with breakfast before heading to the Mohammed V Mosque and Marshan Palace, then moves through the Forest Perdicaris and out to Cap Spartel—a promontory 1,000 feet above sea level at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, about 12 kilometers west of the city. From there you look out over the point where the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet. Below the cape sit the Caves of Hercules, where the sea entrance is shaped like the map of Africa when viewed from the water—a formation believed to have been carved by the Phoenicians. You'll walk through both the sea-facing and land-facing entrances.

Back toward the city, you ride a camel on Achakkar's sandy beach along the Atlantic, then visit the Kasbah—a hilltop fortress where Sultan Moulay Ismail built his palace and gardens, now called Dar el Makhzen. The Kasbah Museum of Mediterranean Cultures sits within the same complex. A stop at the Moshe Nahon Synagogue, built by the chief of an important banking family, offers a glimpse of Tangier's layered history. The American Legation, the first American public property outside the United States, marks the diplomatic ties between Morocco and the U.S.

The afternoon takes you into the old Medina—a maze of narrow streets and colorful markets where your guide steers you toward the best quality traditional crafts and helps you negotiate prices. You'll have time to browse and buy, then settle on one of the panoramic terraces overlooking the old city to eat and take in the view. Coffee, tea or orange juice and bottled water come throughout the day. WiFi is available on board the air-conditioned vehicle.
