The experience

The tour starts in the French quarter, where Synagogue Shaar Rafael sits on the main street. From there you move into the Spanish and American quarters, then continue west to Cape Spartel, 14 kilometers from the city center, where the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean meet and the coastline marks the division between Africa and Europe. The Caves of Hercules are also on the route. After these outlying sites, the day turns inward to the medina, where the real depth of the tour unfolds.

Gran Socco, the main market square, is where you see the daily life of Tangier: vendors selling spices, fruits, vegetables, meat and fish, and the Mindobia garden at the center. From there, narrow medina streets lead to the Jewish quarter proper. You visit Assayag, Rebbi Akiba and Moshe Nahon synagogues in sequence, then walk to the old Jewish cemetery, Beit Hahayim. Petit Socco and the American legation round out the stops. Your guide provides context at each site, explaining the history and significance of the buildings and the community they served.

The tour runs four to five hours with a private certified guide and air-conditioned transport throughout. Children from age two are welcome. The route is wheelchair accessible, and specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with small children.
