The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel or Tangier's port, then moves through the city by air-conditioned minivan. Your guide introduces Tangier's history and colonial architecture, passing through the residential quarter La Montagne where the King's palace sits among homes once occupied by artists and writers drawn to the city: Barbara Hutton, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and others left their mark here. The drive takes you to Cape Spartel, the northernmost point of Africa, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean at the Strait of Gibraltar.
On the return toward the city center, you stop for a camel ride along the beach or at least time to photograph the animals. The tour then enters the Kasbah on foot, walking the narrow streets where the French painter Henri Matisse found inspiration in the old city's colors and people. The Kasbah's main square hosts daily performances (Gnaoua musicians, snake charmers, and the Cercle de musique arabo-andalouse), and you'll have access to the Kasbah Museum. The Medina spreads out from there: a maze of alleys and souks where you can buy handmade goods and talk directly with vendors. Coffee and tea are provided during the day, and you get free time to shop at your own pace.
The tour also covers the Caves of Hercules, a natural and historical site outside the city. Tangier's religious heritage is part of the itinerary too: the ancient Jewish quarter Mellah, the Moise Nahon and Chaare Raphael synagogues, and churches like Saint Andrew and San Francisco that reflect Morocco's tradition of religious tolerance. Other stops include the Petit and Grand Socco squares, Mendoubia Park, and the American Legation, a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
