Volubilis is the oldest stop: a 2,000-year-old Roman city where you walk among the remains of a settlement that once stood at the edge of the empire. The site sits on high ground with views across the valley. From there, the drive is short to Moulay Idriss, a compact hilltop town built around the shrine of Moulay Idriss I, who brought Islam to Morocco in 789 AD. The narrow streets are steep and winding. A quick tour on foot shows the layout and the central sanctuary, though non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum itself.

Meknes, the final stop, is the largest of the three and takes up most of the afternoon. Founded in the 11th century as a military settlement, it became an Imperial capital under Moulay Ismail. The main sights are concentrated in the medina and around El Hedim square: Bab Mansour (the monumental gate), the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, El Heri es-Souani (royal stables), and the Museum of Moroccan Art, which holds traditional handicrafts and textiles. You can break for lunch whenever you prefer during the day. The driver will suggest a spot, but the choice and the cost are yours. The tour ends with a return to your hotel or riad in Fez, arriving in the evening after roughly ten hours out.

What exactly is left to see at Volubilis after 2,000 years?

Volubilis preserves the stone foundations, columns, and floor mosaics of a Roman settlement that flourished until around the 3rd century AD. The mosaics are the most striking remnant (geometric and figurative designs still visible in situ) along with the outlines of houses, a basilica, and a triumphal arch. The site is open-air and unroofed, so you are walking through the footprint of the ancient city rather than entering intact buildings.

Can I actually go inside the Moulay Idriss Mausoleum in Moulay Idriss?

Non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I, which is the holiest shrine in the town. The quick tour covers the narrow streets and the layout of the town around it, and you can see the exterior and the surrounding medina, but entry to the sanctuary itself is restricted to Muslim visitors.
