The Experience

“Is that really a stork?” I blurted out before I could stop myself — our driver just grinned and nodded as we slowed by the dam outside Fes. The air smelled like wet earth and wild mint. We’d barely left the city, but already it felt like we were somewhere else entirely. The minibus was quiet except for someone’s soft playlist up front, and honestly, I kind of liked that nobody was trying too hard. Just fields rolling by and the occasional sheep staring us down.

I’d seen photos of Volubilis before, but standing there among those columns — well, you can’t really get it until you’re there. Our guide in Meknes (Khalid, who somehow remembered everyone’s name) pointed out a mosaic with tiny blue tiles still clinging to the ground after two thousand years. He told us how olive oil used to flow through these streets, and I swear you could almost smell it if you closed your eyes. There was a breeze that day, carrying this mix of dust and wildflowers. Someone tried to read a bit of Latin carved into stone; we all laughed because none of us got past “SPQR.”

Moulay Idriss was just a quick stop — enough time to see the whitewashed houses stacked like sugar cubes on the hill. There were kids playing football in an alley and an old man selling figs who winked when I hesitated over my coins (I probably overpaid). Then Meknes: busy, layered, loud in that way Moroccan cities just are. Khalid led us through Bab Mansour’s archway into Hedim Square where everything seemed brighter — carpets draped from balconies, people haggling over oranges, the smell of grilled meat drifting from somewhere behind the museum. Lunch was slow and warm; tagine with preserved lemon that made me want to lick my fingers (I did when nobody looked). We wandered afterward through cool stone halls at Dar Jamai Museum before heading back out into sunlight.

It’s strange how quickly you slip into a rhythm on these trips — new places start feeling familiar by late afternoon. I keep thinking about that mosaic at Volubilis and wondering what stories it would tell if it could talk. Maybe next time I’ll try reading more Latin before coming back.
