You’ll travel from Fes to three unique Moroccan sites: explore ancient Roman ruins at Volubilis, stroll Moulay Idriss’ peaceful medina, and soak up Meknes’ imperial charm—all in one easy day trip.
The morning air in Fes always feels a bit crisp, even in summer. At 8 sharp, our driver picked us up right outside our riad—no need to hunt for the meeting spot. The road west out of the city rolls past olive groves and sleepy villages. It took about an hour before we spotted the first stones of Volubilis rising from the fields. You can’t miss the storks nesting on top of the old Roman columns—our guide said they come back every year. We wandered through mosaics and arches, and if you want all the stories behind them, there’s usually an official guide waiting near the entrance (we grabbed one for a few dirhams). The place smells faintly of wild herbs crushed underfoot, especially after last night’s rain.
Next stop was Moulay Idriss—a town that almost feels like it’s clinging to the hillside. The medina here is quieter than Fes or Meknes; you’ll hear locals chatting in Darija as they buy bread or olives at tiny stalls. Our guide pointed out a little pastry shop just off the main square—try their chebakia if you get a chance. We didn’t stay long but had enough time to peek into a tiled courtyard and watch kids playing with marbles in an alleyway.
Meknes came after lunch. It’s less crowded than Marrakech or Fes but still full of life—especially around Place Lhdim where we grabbed mint tea at Café Opera (the terrace view is worth it). There’s time to wander through the souk or check out Bab Mansour gate—it looks even bigger up close than in photos. Around 6pm, we headed back to Fes with tired feet and way too many photos on our phones.
The tour usually starts around 8am and returns to Fes by 6pm, so expect a full day out exploring.
An official guide isn’t included by default but you can hire one easily at the entrance for a small fee.
Yes! Infants and small children are welcome—strollers and specialized seats are available if needed.
Comfortable shoes are best since you’ll walk on uneven ground at Volubilis and through medinas. Layers help with changing weather.
Your ride is private and air-conditioned for comfort all day. Infants can travel safely with special seats available on request. Service animals are allowed too—just let us know ahead of time.
