The Experience

We’d barely left Fez when our driver Youssef started telling stories about his childhood trips to Meknes. The van was cool inside, but I could see the countryside start to shimmer through the windows—olive trees everywhere, goats sometimes just standing in the road. First stop was Volubilis. I’d seen photos before, but actually walking on those stones (still a bit damp from last night’s rain) felt different. Moulay Idriss sits up on two hills—white houses stacked like sugar cubes. We stopped for mint tea in a tiny café where an old man nodded at us but didn’t say much. Meknes was busier than I expected—market stalls everywhere and the clang of metalworkers echoing off the medina walls. We walked through Bab Mansour gate (it’s huge up close), then wandered past horses in the old royal stables. Inside the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, everything went hushed for a minute—I noticed how cool the tiles felt under my hand. Our guide knew everyone; he kept stopping to greet friends or wave at shopkeepers. Lunch was simple: bread, olives, chicken tagine somewhere near Place el-Hedim—I honestly can’t remember the name because I was too hungry by then.

The drive back was quiet—everyone half asleep except Youssef humming along to some old song on the radio. I keep thinking about those mosaics at Volubilis and how time just sort of folds together out there. If you’re looking for a day trip from Fez that feels real (not rushed), this is it.
