Volubilis is the anchor — two millennia of stone and dust spread across a hillside that once fed the Roman Empire. You'll have time to walk the site on your own or hire a guide on the ground if you want the stories behind the mosaics and the fallen columns. The ruins sit high enough that you can see across the valley, and the light changes the color of the stone every hour. After that, Moulay Idriss appears suddenly as you round a bend — a white town stacked on a ridge, spiritual center of Morocco, the place that shaped the country's faith and politics. Then Meknes, the imperial city with gates that still dwarf you: Bab Khemis, Bab Berdaïne, the seventeenth-century walls that held a kingdom. You'll walk through the stables where the sultan kept his horses, see the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail (one of the few mosques non-Muslims could enter for decades), and cross the vast Hedim square toward Bab Mansour El — the gate that looks like it was built to impress gods, not people.

The Dar Jamai museum sits on the far side of the square if you want to see Moroccan craftsmanship up close — textiles, metalwork, carved wood — but it's not forced into the schedule. The day moves at a pace that lets you breathe between stops, and the driver brings you back to Fez in the late afternoon. No haggling over transport costs, no missed connections, no time spent figuring out where to eat lunch or whether you're going the right direction.
