The experience

The tour leaves Fez heading south to Meknes, where a local guide walks you through the monumental gates (Bab Mansour and Bab Khemis among them), and the massive royal granaries and stables built under Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. You'll see the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and Place El-Hedim before moving on to Moulay Idriss, a hilltop town closed to non-Muslims but open to viewing from the approach. The panoramic vantage point gives the sense of the place without entry. The real archaeological stop comes at Volubilis, where a local guide takes you through the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa, with free time after to photograph and explore at your own pace.

After Volubilis, the route turns north toward Chefchaouen, where you spend the night. The second day is unscheduled: you have the morning and early afternoon to walk the narrow blue alleys of the medina on your own terms, with the city small enough that navigation is straightforward. A professional driver then takes you back to Fez, timing the return to your hotel or starting point. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and mineral water is provided throughout. Lunch stops are not part of the package, nor are entry fees to the historical monuments or the overnight stay in Chefchaouen. Those are arranged separately or at your own cost.

Guides speak English and French and are available at Volubilis and Meknes. Chefchaouen is yours to explore without a guide. The tour suits all fitness levels and works with infants (who can sit on an adult's lap or use a specialized seat if arranged).
