The Experience

We squeezed into the little tuk tuk outside our riad — I was still fumbling with the audio guide app when our driver, Youssef, grinned and waved us on. The first few turns felt like being swept up in a river of scooters and voices. Marrakech’s Medina is louder than I expected: horns, someone calling out in French, then the sudden hush as we zipped past an old tiled fountain. The Bahia Palace was calmer — cool courtyards and sunlight bouncing off blue tiles. I kept touching the carved wood doors because they felt smooth under my fingers (and honestly, it gave me something to do while listening to the audio guide talk about sultans).

There was this bit through Mellah, the old Jewish Quarter, where you catch flashes of daily life — kids chasing each other past spice shops, old men chatting in doorways. We passed Bab Agnaou too; Youssef slowed down so we could see the stonework up close. He laughed when I tried to say “Bab Agnaou” properly (I definitely didn’t). The souks are a blur of color and noise — lanterns overhead, leather bags everywhere, spices piled high like little pyramids. The last stop was Ben Youssef Madrasa. It’s quieter there; almost peaceful after all that chaos outside. We wandered around for a bit — more photos (less blurry this time), more stories from the audio guide about students who studied here centuries ago. By then my head was spinning in a good way — too many impressions to sort out right away. And then we were back in the tuk tuk again, winding through alleys toward home with a box of Moroccan sweets in my lap.
