The experience

The winery sits in Godinje, a heritage village inside Skadar Lake National Park, about 5 km from Virpazar and 35 km from Podgorica. The family has owned this place for 14 generations, and the agronomist who runs it now speaks English and walks you through the wines and the long history of winemaking in this corner of Montenegro. You taste three different wines, each paired with homemade snacks, and a glass of fruit liqueur or traditional brandy rounds out the tasting. The whole thing takes 1.5 hours on the winery's terrace.

Tastings start at noon, 2 pm, 4 pm or 6 pm. You pick the time that fits your day. The winery is reachable by car from Virpazar, or by bike or on foot if you want to make the journey from town. Godinje itself is worth the trip: it's the first heritage settlement ever declared in Montenegro, with stone houses and the remains of a 14th-century summer house built by the Balsic royal family. Most of the village is quiet now, which is part of what makes it feel like stepping into a different era.
