The experience

The boat leaves Virpazar, a small town thirty minutes from Podgorica, after the guide checks your voucher and explains the National Park fee at the meeting point. Once aboard, you navigate a narrow river channel lined with willow and reed fences, with views of Mount Vranjina and the Albanian ranges opening up as the water widens. The route is built around what lives here: native bird species perch on the ruins of Lesendro Fortress as you pass, and the Morača River, an Important Bird Area, is where the guide slows to let you watch them.

Midway through, the boat stops in open water for a swim. You'll need your swimsuit and towel. The water is deep and clear. On the return to Virpazar, the guide points out landmarks and answers questions about the lake's ecology and the fortress. Wine and juice come aboard, and you'll have a map to orient yourself to what you're seeing.
