The experience

The boat leaves Virpazar and heads into the quieter part of Lake Skadar, where the water narrows into channels lined with reeds and lush vegetation. This stretch, often called the "Amazon," is where the lake's birdlife concentrates and the scenery feels untouched. Along the way, you pass the remains of Lesendro Fortress and several small islands before the channels open again toward Karuč.

Karuč sits between hills and the lake, a small fishing village with deep roots in the region. The village is known for its 54 natural springs (some reaching depths of over 50 meters), which contrasts sharply with Lake Skadar's average depth of about 5 meters. It was also the winter residence of Petar I Petrović Njegoš. After the boat arrives, you climb a short 10-minute walk to a viewpoint above the village, where the guide explains the area's history and geography while you photograph the village and the channel below. The return journey follows a different channel back toward Virpazar, so the scenery shifts across the day.
