Vrmac is a mountain and peninsula between Kotor and Tivat bay in Montenegro. You hike marked trails through 5 kilometers of rocky terrain, passing two viewpoints before reaching the Vrmac fortress, an Austro-Hungarian fortification built in 1860, and then the St. Ilija peak at 785 meters, where you can see the entire bay and surrounding peaks. An English-speaking guide leads the hike. Pickup from your accommodation and return transport are included. The tour takes five to six hours plus transfer time, and you'll need moderate fitness and comfortable hiking shoes.

  • Enjoy nature and rural architecture
  • Climb to first viewpoint over Tivat bay

The experience

The hike starts on marked paths through untouched terrain, moving over rocky ground and past wells as you climb toward the first viewpoint overlooking Tivat bay. The second viewpoint opens views across both Tivat bay and the open sea on one side, and Kotor Bay on the other. The landscape is dotted with plant species and rural architecture that frame the route.

The centerpiece is the Vrmac fortress, one of the best-preserved Austro-Hungarian fortifications in the Bay of Kotor, built in 1860. Walking through its remains shows how these structures were constructed during that era. From there, the trail continues to the summit of St. Ilija, where you stop to take in views of the entire bay and the surrounding mountain peaks. The descent follows the other side of Vrmac, dropping through the village of Donja Lastva before reaching the road where your driver waits.

Bring comfortable hiking shoes, water and food for the climb. The tour runs year-round depending on weather, though it is most reliable in autumn, winter and spring. Hiking sticks, travel insurance and an air-conditioned vehicle for the transfer are provided.

Is this one for you?The five to six hour commitment means you can fit this hike into a single morning or afternoon if your accommodation is close to Kotor, but plan the rest of your day around the transfer time. The moderate fitness requirement rules out casual walkers, but anyone comfortable with sustained uphill hiking on rocky ground will find the marked trail manageable.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.

How steep is the hike up Vrmac, and what kind of fitness do I need?

The hike is rated medium weight and requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The trail climbs to 785 meters over 5 kilometers of marked paths with rocky sections, so you should be comfortable with sustained uphill walking and uneven ground.

Can I see both Kotor and Tivat bay from the top?

Yes. The route includes two viewpoints: the first overlooks Tivat bay, and the second opens views across both Tivat bay and the open sea on one side and Kotor Bay on the other. From the St. Ilija summit at 785 meters, you see the entire bay and surrounding mountain peaks.

Does the tour include food and water, or do I bring my own?

You bring your own water and food for the hike. The tour includes hiking sticks and a short break at the summit to rest and enjoy the view.

How does the transfer work, and where does the hike start and end?

Pickup from your accommodation is included, and the driver waits at the end of the hike near Kotor to return you. The five to six hour hike itself begins on marked trails and finishes on a road not far from Kotor, so the total time depends on where you are staying.
